Two vendors have been chosen for a two-year e-scooter pilot program. Bird and Neuron will provide the scooters for rent as what the City calls an affordable, convenient and sustainable transportation option. Neuron’s shared e-scooters will be available to ride as early as today (Thurs) and Bird’s e-scooters are expected by Monday.
The provincial regulations for e-scooters are that the speed limit is 24 km/h, with riders being 16 or older and helmets are mandatory. The e-scooters are only to be used within the approved service area on shared-use paths, pathways, cycle tracks, protected bike lanes and, where no such paths are available, on streets with posted speed limits of 50 km/h or lower. These e-scooters aren’t permitted on sidewalks.
Personal e-scooters are currently not allowed on any city street, sidewalk or pathway, but the City plans to consider that next year after the first year of the pilot program.
