A resident expressed his concerns to the most recent Board of Police Commissioners meeting with how people have been driving in Saskatoon.
William Smith said he’s seen a number of cars fail to signal when exiting a lot or motorists failing to stop for yellow flashing lights at a pedestrian crossing.
“Nobody seems to want to obey and when you correct them, they get angry. I just about got ran over at a Tim Hortons parking lot the other night, Tuesday night and he was mad at me because he came in speeding, got mad at me because I was walking across, I don’t move fast.”
Smith says concerns started back in the mid-80s when he was involved in a motorcycle accident downtown which resulted in him flying several feet.
Chief Troy Cooper says traffic safety is a community responsibility, although the City does have its own role with school zone placements and speed limits.
Cooper points to technology with red light cameras and speed cameras as way to help control residents with their driving.
While it’s a provincial responsibility, some provinces can hold a driver accountable for failing to signal or improperly turning into intersections, which isn’t currently the case in Saskatchewan.
