The latest scam is targeting users of Facebook Messenger. Saskatoon Police have been receiving complains about the scam where people are receiving messages from what looks like an account of one of their Facebook friends, but it’s actually a fraudster who has copied the account to appear as them.
The so-called friend claims they have received a government grant and invites you to click on a link to a website provided in the message. The link goes to a fake website that asks the victim to apply for the grant but you have to provide your personal information. There is also a fee charged to apply.
If you get a message like this, it’s not from your friend, and if you are a victim, file an online report with the Saskatoon Police Service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency.
