The Saskatchewan Environment Ministry is once again testing for Chronic Wasting Disease this year. The ministry’s Edith Stasiak says hunters are encouraged to turn in the heads of deer, moose, elk and caribou. She says its important to get as many samples as possible to track the incurable nervous system disease. She says it helps them understand the distribution of the disease and the infection rates in the wildlife population and that helps in developing a management strategy. What’s different this year is the province is targeting certain areas of the province. While the central nervous system disease is fatal in cervid game animals, there’s no evidence it can be transmitted to domestic livestock.
